Now that you have selected an idea to research, you need to get an overview of that subject area and the amount of information that might be available for you to use in your research.

Developing an overview of a topic before you firmly commit to it is important for several reasons. Getting an overview will tell you:

• the key terminology of the subject
• whether there is enough information available
• whether your research idea is too broad or too narrow
• which facet of your research idea is most appropriate for your assignment

As you develop your overview, ask yourself the following questions:

• What are the most important terms?
• What are the broader and narrower concepts related to your subject area?
• How much information is available?
• What aspect of your research idea is best for your assignment?
