Organize your Research and Write a Preliminary Topic Statement

Write a preliminary topic statement

Once you have organized your thoughts and information, write a preliminary topic statement that clearly and concisely expresses your research idea.

A topic statement is the general subject of your research project. This is distinct from the purpose, a thesis statement, facts, or opinions. These elements are used to develop and organize the final presentation of your research.

Examples:

Education in colonial America was very different for boys and girls

Religion had a great deal of influence on the development of public education in the New England colonies
