Identify Key Concepts

Example of a Concept table:

As you identify your primary and secondary concepts and the terms that describe them, you can build a concept table. Concept Tables organize concepts, list the terms that describe them, and identify the relationships between these concepts. They are very useful in developing effective search strategies and statements.

Thesis statement:

The non-English American colonists' reasons for immigrating varied from one country to another.

View an example concept table.

Then start building your own concept table for your topic. Additional terms can be added any time you find them.

HINT: Notice, in the example, that each concept is itself listed as a keyword, subject heading, or related term. This will happen frequently. A good descriptive concept term should also be the most important keyword or subject heading you will use.
