Using the Boolean AND

The Boolean operator AND expresses the narrowing relationship when it is used in a search statement with primary and secondary concept terms. It does this by telling the searching software to retrieve only those records which contain both of the specified terms.

Thesis statement:

The non-English American colonists' reasons for immigrating varied from one country to another.

Example of a Boolean AND operator used in a search statement

colonists AND American

The syntax of this search statement narrows the scope of your search to only those items which contain both colonists and American in any order.

Boolean AND looks for overlap between search terms: records with both colonist and american, for instance

The Boolean logical operator AND is a very effective way to reduce the number of items you retrieve to those most likely to be relevant to your topic.
