The broadening relationship

Most of the time, the relationship between terms in the same concept category is broadening. Generally, terms within the same concept category are synonyms or closely related terms. Using more than one of these terms ensures that you do not miss relevant items because their bibliographic records did not contain your first concept term. However, this also increases the total number of items you retrieve.

Thesis statement:

The non-English American colonists' reasons for immigrating varied from one country to another.

In the topic statement above, the primary concept "colonists" has several related terms that can be used to retrieve relevant results. Some terms that are related to the main term "colonists" are: settlers, and immigrants.

There are three ways to express the "broadening" relationship in the search statement syntax.
