Truth is a three-edged blade. There are always at least two sides to any topic, along with the truth somewhere in the middle- usually. There are generally three reasons people put information on the web:
-
To sell you something
-
Because the topic is a personal obsession with the author
-
To disseminate information, sometimes biased information, to persuade you of a point of view
Some examples of these types of web pages are:
-
A corporation would like for you to purchase their product directly through their web site
-
Fans of a television show create web sites which could include episode guides, chat sessions, character analyses, message boards, image libraries, and fiction created by fans about the television show.
-
An association wants you to agree with them and possibly become a member of the organization.
In general, you should determine the reason that the page exists and whether, on that basis, there is an implied bias. More often than not, the goals of the sponsors/authors aren't clearly stated, leaving that determination up to you.
