Use access tools to find information sources

Using Search Engines to find specific information sources

When you need to find web based information sources relevant to your topic:

  1. Select your search engine carefully.
HINT: Most libraries link the better search engines to their web sites.
  2. Choose your search terms carefully
    • Your key topic term or broader subject area term plus a form subdivision term works reasonably well for finding information sources with a search engine
  3. Enter these key terms in the search bar
  4. Scan the first screen or two for relevant and useful results
    • If no results are relevant or useful, try a different topic term plus a form subdivision.
    • If some results are relevant, select the most relevant and evaluate the entire site for its reliability before you use any information from it.
  5. Print or save the homepage of any web information source you select. You will need this information later.
    • Record the URL of the web site
    • Record the date you accessed the web site
    • Record your assessment of its reliability
